His story
- 01Record
Twenty of his twenty-six years have been spent here
James first joined Chelsea at six, spent one year at Fulham and came straight back. He grew up from a striker who idolised Didier Drogba into the captain of the academy side that won the FA Youth Cup. Then came a goal and two assists on his senior debut, the Champions League at 21 and the Chelsea captaincy at 23. Almost his entire life has unfolded at the same club.

Six hamstring injuries in five years
James missed 82 of Chelsea's first 190 league matches after his debut, with six separate hamstring injuries in five years. Surgery in 2023 was supposed to break the cycle, but more rehabilitation followed. He later described those months as lonely and frustrating, which explains why every sustained run in the team feels like both a comeback and a reprieve.

His sister plays for Chelsea too
Lauren James joined Chelsea Women in 2021, bringing both siblings under the same club badge. She and Reece became the first brother and sister in the modern era to represent England at senior level. Their father Nigel coached them both, helping two children from the same south-west London family become England internationals.
