Welbeck is the experienced alternative at centre-forward. He presses centre-backs, runs beyond them and attacks crosses rather than dropping as often as João Pedro. That gives Chelsea a more direct route to goal when the game needs one.

Manchester United spotted him when he was six
Welbeck grew up in Longsight in Manchester and began playing for Fletcher Moss Rangers, a junior club with an extraordinary record of producing professionals. Manchester United noticed him at six and brought him into their academy. He eventually won the Premier League there, then added two FA Cups after moving to Arsenal.

A career spent getting back up
Osgood-Schlatter disease, a painful knee condition in growing teenagers, interrupted Welbeck's academy years, and pneumonia arrived on top of it. He made it through, only for serious knee and ankle injuries to keep breaking up his senior career. The fact Chelsea still paid £5m for him at 35 says almost as much about his resilience as his ability.

Welbeck first appeared in the Premier League for Manchester United in 2008. Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford, Brighton and Chelsea have followed, stretching his top-flight career across three different decades. Several players in this squad were still in nursery when it began.
