His role
Gittens is the pure one-on-one winger. He stays wide until the ball arrives, attacks the full-back at speed and cuts inside to shoot or create. Alonso can use him late when Chelsea need to make the pitch bigger and unsettle a settled defence.

He moved abroad at sixteen—and barely played for 18 months
Gittens left Manchester City for Dortmund in 2020, moving to Germany alone at sixteen. Covid restrictions turned the adventure into training, language lessons and long stretches inside the club's youth house. For his first year and a half, there were almost no matches and barely any chance to discover the city he had moved to.

Only Trezeguet has done it younger
Gittens came off Dortmund's bench away to Club Brugge in September 2024 and scored twice. At 20, he became the second-youngest substitute to score two goals in a Champions League match. The only player to do it younger was World Cup winner David Trezeguet, back in 1997.

He won the Club World Cup without being allowed to play
Chelsea signed Gittens in the middle of the 2025 Club World Cup, but tournament rules meant he could not play because he had already represented Dortmund. He watched his new teammates win the trophy without being eligible for a minute. It was another odd turn in a long Chelsea orbit: he had first trained with the club as a boy before choosing Reading at under-nine level.
